Does this sound familiar?
“Oh no, it’s not morning again? Let me snooze the alarm clock and get back into that lovely warm bed
I don’t want to get up, there’s nothing to get up for! I’ve got to commute to work for 1 hour, then work for 9 hours and commute 1 hour back home! I hate work and wish I could just do something else...”
I feel unfulfilled in my life and WISH I knew what I wanted to do… I can’t imagine working for someone else for the next 30 years making someone else rich! Aggghhh, please help me!
I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly how I used to feel! I hated my job, I wanted to stay at home and do something meaningful with my life. I always knew I had a higher calling in life but I just didn’t know what it was.
It took me years to find it! But eventually I did! You can read my purpose here: http://www.gavinmountford.com/my-purpose/ (It’s fairly short and concise but it’s exactly what I was put on this planet for. I jump up every morning because I know I’m going to help people achieve their dreams!)
Your Purpose is What Drives You… it’s the REASON You Were Put on This Planet!
When you learn to connect to your driving force and your ultimate purpose you will JUMP out of bed in the morning full of energy, incredibly excited about what the day has to offer and how you can help and IMPACT other people!
Your purpose really is the HIGHEST level of the factor 9 time management tower and it is the reason you do everything else you do…
Once you have your purpose in place, everything else will fall into place!
Whenever I’m planning something I want to know WHY I’m doing it! In fact, I follow Tony Robbins approach of:
- Result (What is my outcome?)
- Purpose (Why am I doing it?)
- Massive Action Plan (How am I going to achieve it?)
How Do You Figure Out What Your Purpose Is?
Well, that’s for you to work out yourself. There are lots of books, courses and videos on the subject…. just search Google or Amazon and you’ll find them.
A couple of key points you’ll want to bear in mind.
- Don’t make it all about you (We’ll do much more for other people than we will for ourselves)
- Think about the BIG picture, your ultimate purpose of WHY you were put on this planet
- Think about how you can add value to other people and make a huge IMPACT in the world. When you are aiming for something much bigger than yourself, it inspires you and drives you on
- It’s not about your material possessions. Yes, they can help and can make life more enjoyable, but it’s not really a purpose. Material possessions quickly lose their appeal whereas a life purpose drives you on. (Your purpose may never be achieved but you will continue to strive to achieve it which will allow you to be constantly motivated and excited by the prospect of it)
- Contribution is HUGE. By helping other people you are making a big difference in the world and other people’s lives. (Zig Ziglar once said, if you can help enough people get what they want, then you can have anything you want in life)
- Feel it in your heart. Pay attention to feelings, if it feels right, then chances are you’ve got it! If it doesn’t, then keep working on it
Really work at this, write it down, reflect on it every day, refine it, tweak it and eventually you’ll have something that will drive you forward and make your life worth living!
Remember, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!
I Love My Life… Do You Love Yours?

My purpose is to impact the lives of people who want to age with grace; you might say. So many of us grow old and can’t do what we used to. Yes it is definitely a part of the aging process. But we dont’ have to end up in care homes, not being able to do anything for ourselves, not knowing our family or even who we are. We can always work with our bodies and minds to help stay strong and youthful for life. This has impacted me as I work daily at doing things that will help me stay strong and youthful. I have impacted others in my life to do the same. We don’t have to be a drain on the health care system, we can take our health into our own hands and help others do the same.

Gavin,
Great article. It amazes me how many people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their life! Spending time to figure out your purpose is one of the smartest things you can do. It gives you motivation and direction and a sense of fulfillment.
Thanks for the great post.

“Remember, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!”
That sentence alone reminded me about how much a lot people forget to serve others.
Only after THAT is when we start to see abundance flow into their lives. Having that PURPOSE (always) in mind (our purpose in doing ANYTHING that we do, whether it’s going on FB or creating a capture page) is a MUST if we want to keep in the direction of our goals.

I have always felt a little uncomfortable with thinking about my purpose. It is like ” who do I think that I am to have a life purpose.” I thought purpose was suppose to be for people who would acheive some greatness. But since working on your course I see that purpose is something that everybody should have. Although I haven’t figured it out totally, with your guidance I am sure that my purpose will become more clear.

Thanks for letting me know Joyce, I’m really glad you are gradually finding and looking for your purpose! It will come in time. Just go through the exercises I gave in DYOP. Keep me informed. Most people never find their purpose, and that’s ok also… it’s all down to the individual. If you love what you do, then chances are… you are already living your purpose.

Hi Gavin,
Purpose is a huge deal for me. I found my purpose many years ago when I became a homeopath and then moved into BioEnergetic Medicine. My move to the US took my off course for a season – my qualifications weren’t transferable and family matters kept me away. However, I am now back working in my professional health field and wow, i know this is my purpose to help people return their cells to normal and life a healthy life. Now my social marketing and online presence has a purpose to share my health message with as many as possible. Of course, time will determine that my time over the past three years had great purpose as I learned marketing and met amazing people across the globe.
be blessed,
Clare

Awesome Clare, and great to hear from you! I’m glad you are following your purpose and you love what you do! That’s the most important part… most people dislike what they do and it shows in their work and results.
How are you doing? What have you been up to recently? I’m currently putting a new product together called Do What You Love For Your Living!

Hi Gavin,
I completely agree that we need to be conscious and mindful of our purpose or else we can fall in that trap of not wanting to get up in the morning and moaning that we want a bed day.
It is great to be able to get up and know that we are here to help each other live a more productive and compassionate life. With all of the self help and personal development books and DVDs, with a bit of practice it is easy to shift your mindset to a more meaningful perspective.
Thanks for this Gavin!

Hi Gavin,
This is so true. Unless we have a solid purpose and passion it is almost impossible to stay focused on a home business. Fortunately I realize I have no idea what I am doing, so I go where my intuition takes me. That has been all over the world to many sacred sites and fab adventures.
For what it is worth, my purpose is about connecting the practical to the spiritual through the heart. I found it a long time ago, and it has driven my decdisions ever since.
I can tell you after 25 years, it is still there. Finding this is the beginning of a vibrant life in my opinion.

Hi John,
Thanks for stopping by. It sounds like you really enjoy/love what you do and that’s great! Sometimes it takes us many years to be living our purpose and to enjoy what we do.
As you said… most people don’t know what they are doing and that’s fine too! It’s being able to trust in yourself and allow your intuition to take over…
That’s one of the fun parts of being self employed… you make up the rules as you go.
Thanks for dropping by, I appreciate it!

Purpose…. Hmmmm… What if our purpose here is to learn all we can so we can find our greater purpose. Then when we find our higher purpose we discover that we are still a full dimension shy of our full purpose?
It appears our purpose is in part based on our perspective. Seem to me, the most important thing we can do is give up on trying to arrive at any given moment on our “single” purpose. Instead finding joy in our evolving perspective which sheds light on our greater purpose. We each will continue to enjoy greater purpose and cause than we’ve ever known as we make progress.
Our purpose? Gain a more accurate perspective of our potential then pursue that fulness until we discover greater enlightenment. Rinse and repeat… Ever learning is our purpose.

Very interesting Jim! I believe we all have a life purpose and also a moment by moment purpose. Our higher life purpose is that which we strive for and aim towards.
Out moment by moment purpose is giving ALL out attention to the task or activity we are doing. Not using it as a means to an end but being absorbed by it. Not thinking about the next thing we should be or will be doing but just focused on the task at hand…
I enjoy practising this when I can although sometimes it’s a challenge as we are so conditioned to always moving on to the next task.

I can totally relate to the feeling of not wanting to get out of bed and go to work. Those days are long gone for me too. It is one of my reasons for building my business. So I could have the freedom to work when I want to. Funny thing, Now I jump out of bed at 5:00 am many mornings because I can’t wait to get to work. I love sharing and teaching the things I have learned to get my own freedom. I wish more people would join us.

An excellent reminder, Gavin. Your remarks about purpose caused me to recall the story of the swamp. “When you’re up to your neck in alligators you forget that you came there to drain the swamp.”

You’re an inspiration, Gavin: you always give such great value. Thank you.

I remember the days when I used to dread monday mornings and even got ill regularly on a sunday afternoon just thinking about returning to work. I had a message to share and I was just not doing it. One day the message screamed so loudly that I took the plunge and set up a business doing what I love. Such a difference. I enjoy starting work on a monday now. Its made a huge difference in my life and although its hard at first to take the plunge and be responsible for your own paycheck its well worth it.

I grew up with poverty, and it has dogged my footsteps my entire adult life. Ian is a faithful, diligent worker, but even with only three children still at home, his salary is not enough to support our family. When he turns 65, our youngest will be 13 years old. I want out of the cycle of poverty.
But my Why goes a lot further than that.
I want to own my mind, my body, my health, my LIFE. I want to teach my kids how to own their lives, and help a whole lot of others own theirs. I want to be able to pay forward the generosity others have always shown us when we were in need. I want to give to charity and the Lord’s work, specifically to the Bible Women in India, and the orphaned or abandoned children being helped by Gospel for Asia.
My purpose is to use the gift of writing I have been given, for the encourgement, edification and education of others so that they too can craft their own Why.

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt purpose. My purpose is to help men and women heal their bodies, their relationships and their lives through love. I can only do that to the extent that I heal my own body, relationships and my life. I use my sensitivity, persistence and al that training and knowledge and education to listen attentively and guide others to find the love that is in their heart for their own self first and then for others in their life. It’s an ongoing process of learning how to love more and more deeply and letting go of all the barriers and resistances.

Ever since I was a teen I’ve known my purpose. But none of the details ever came clear beyond that. Life hasn’t turned out as I wanted, but then, maybe God led me on this journey to teach me what I needed to know to fulfill His purpose for me. I believe He’s led me to the place where I am now, and I’m getting a glimpse of how this purpose might be fulfilled. Exciting!! Finally!!

Well, this is a thought provoking post, Gavin
I remember writing my mission statement when I was heavily into Covey’s 7 habits…. it was quite a fulfilling exercise… my purpose now?
Well, its kind of a lot different than it used to be. Now I focus on my spiritual purpose as well as my temporal purpose……it is comforting to know that I know where I came from, why I am here and where I am going.
But right now… while I am here, my purpose is to enjoy my life, love my family and help as many people as I can to be as successful as they aim to be with their health and prosperity!
Have a great week

What a great and very inspiring post Gavin.
My mind kept going back to what I have done recently with my husband and children. On a Saturday night after dinner, we all cleared the plates and made room in the middle of the table for my iPhone. I searched for my audio of “The 7 habits of Highly Effective People” and I went to the bookmark I saved earlier and hit play…
We listened to the part about creating a family mission statement. My kids are 12 and 16… LOL…At first they were like…what is that? We work at our mission statement and a few hours later…we were done.
Your post about purpose and how you say to work at it and write it down and tweak it made me travel to that wonderful memory. I believe that doing these kinds of exercises make us grow so much and better yet…it give a fabulous legacy for our children and the people we inspire to share the experience and continue to do the same.
I love what you say here: Contribution is HUGE. By helping other people you are making a big difference in the world and other people’s lives. (Zig Ziglar once said, if you can help enough people get what they want, then you can have anything you want in life)

Hi Gavin, this post has really inspired me . Helping baby boomers in my local area profit in a down economy to be healthier and have a great life is my passion in life and creating a business where I can help other people achieve their dreams and see them unfold is something everybody should experience. All the heartaches of doing things wrong, redoing them over and over again trying to get it right to loosing posts on my blog because I hit the wrong button is well worth it when it comes to doing what I love. And you’re right on when you know your purpose and it really does allow you to enjoy working on your business and giving without expecting anything in return. It’s the only way to have a business you enjoy doing as well as learning everything that works and allows your target market to succeed.

Hi Gavin! Once we know what our purpose is, all the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place. My purpose is teaching people coping mechanisms for the internet marketer who is running every aspect of their business. That’s just putting it shortly.
When you know your purpose, and share it, it is part of that magnetic marketing that brings people into your space. You are honest and true to those you are speaking to and they will be attracted to that.
It does take time to know your purpose because sometimes we have many passions such as our devotion to our children, making money to support ourselves, giving to the community, etc. We need to sit down and clarify it, and decide what is the Main purpose we are trying to give.
Thanks Gavin for this thought-provoking post.

Purpose…just saying that word out loud has a strong feel to it. Purpose is what it is all about. Having a purpose will enable and empower us in goal-setting. Goals will give us the path to results and those results will give us the ability to evaluate what we are doing and where we are going.

Purpose is extremely important…it is the drive behind what we do. Without it…and I know this is cliché, we cannot move forward toward success. I see a lot of people even just in blogging struggle to have a purpose or focus for their website outside of just making money. The purpose is tied very much with passion.
