0 – The Big Picture

Let's take a birds-eye look at the Factor 9 from the very top. This is the big picture and in this training you'll see how EVERYTHING ties together…

1 – Purpose

Your purpose is WHAT you are on this planet to achieve. It's your highest calling. Everything else you do is aligned beneath it and help you fulfil your purpose.

The great news is that the upper part of the Factor 9 need only be written and created once. The main thing that changes is the strategies, goals, projects and tasks.

2 – Vision (Why)

This is why you're on planet earth for! It's the reason you do everything and it's WHY you do what you do. Once you've worked out your in depth vision, everything else you do aligns with fulfilling your purpose. By working down the Factor 9, you are able to make sure that the tasks you do on a daily basis tie in with your purpose.

You need a STRONG vision, a strong WHY to drive you every single day to action. Without a strong enough reason, you will fail.

3 – Mission

This is how you're going to achieve your purpose and vision. What vehicle are you going to choose to help you fulfil your purpose and vision? Your vehicle may change as you move through life.

You may decide that in order to achieve your purpose you are going to set up your own Internet business. You may decide you need to have multiple income streams and you may decide to build a network marketing business.

You may also decide that you need to set up a blog, a website, create your own product etc… so what are the various components you are going to use to achieve your purpose?

4 – Values & Principles

What do you live by and how do you conduct yourself on a daily basis? I've always had a code of conduct, and a list of values and principles I live by.

It doesn't matter if you are working, or if you are playing. If you are with one set of people, or if you are with a different group… in order to be TRUE to yourself, you should strive to live by your values and principles.

5 – Results Areas

In order to take control of your life, you need to separate your life out into different results areas.

You usually have 2 main areas which are then further sub divided.

  1. Personal
  2. Business
You can then divide your personal into 3-5 other sections depending on what you do. My personal areas of focus are:
  • Family & Friends
  • Health & Fitness
  • Spirituality
  • Personal Development
I then have my goals and things I want to accomplish for each of the areas each year, quarter and month. The projects and tasks then drive the goals I've set.

6 – Strategies

Strategies are key! They are the steps you take in order to achieve a certain outcome, or to master a certain skill.

When you are taking a course, the whole purpose of the course is to show you or teach you HOW to do something. As you are learning, you MUST be making your own strategy or blueprint on how to achieve the outcome that the courfgfse is talking about.

You then follow the strategy and achieve the outcome that the course was teaching you.

Once you've got your strategies in place, you just work the strategy and get the result. You will have multiple strategies for each thing you are trying to do.

Your job is to find and learn the specific strategy you need to achieve the outcome you want to achieve as quickly as possible.

Most of this blog and what I share with you will be based on helping you find the perfect strategies for achieving success in your business.

7  - Goals

You set goals based on what you want to achieve in your life and you have both long term and short term goals.

You will need to have the following goals:

  • 10 year goals
  • 5 year goals
  • 2 year goals
  • 1 year goals
  • Quarterly goals
  • Monthly goals
  • Weekly outcomes
I like to set weekly MUST have outcomes in my business which I work like crazy to achieve. These weekly outcomes always support my monthly goals, which eventually line up to achieving my ultimate vision and purpose.

8 – Projects

Your projects must support your goals. Once you've defined your strategies for what you want to achieve, you break it down into goals. Your then work towards completing your projects which take you closer towards your goals.

David Allen defines a project as anything with more than 1 action step. So, you will have multiple projects on the go at the same time. Sometimes you'll have MEGA PROJECTS which have several milestones to achieve.

You will need to break down your mega projects (such as creating your own information product), into smaller sub projects in order to achieve it.

9 – Tasks

Finally you get to DO something! This is where the rubber hits the road. It's the run way, and it's where all your ACTION takes place.

I'm sure in the past (or even still) you just do, do, do stuff all the time. So, you get a lot done. The PROBLEM is… you might be getting the WRONG things done.

By making sure everything aligns up correctly with your purpose, vision, mission and then the projects and tasks you do on a regular basis align with the goals you set, then you will get the right things done all the time which will take you much close towards fulfilling your life purpose!

It's simple when you know how! It just takes a fair bit of thinking about first, before you do your actions.

What Next?

My advice would be to go into a little more detail in each of these levels. Start to understand what it all means and how you can apply it to your life and business…

This blog will focus mostly on the strategies you need to run a SUCCESSFUL Internet business!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. I am loving the way you are looking at these nine terms with the idea of giving each of them attention. I agree that a balanced sane approach to business is to address all of them, not just your fav. Some love talking about their purpose to the exclusion of little else. Others create projects with no clear why. So it's all good.

Now a question. You introduce use of the term "Strategies." But I don't notice the term often paired with it: "Tactics." I wonder where you think that fits. I'm thinking that we use tactics to implement tasks. Tactics, together with tasks are used to implement projects, which of course are guided by our strategies. What's your thought?

    • Hi Richard,

That's a great point… tactics can definitely be how we implement our tasks. How we use routines, batches, block time, NET time, 80/20 etc etc… Strategies are the step by step blueprints we use to achieve certain results.

I think tactics would fit into Strategies… I'll do some more thinking about it when I finish writing about all of the levels.

      Appreciate your input!

Have you been working on any other collaborative projects recently?

  2. Hi Gavin,

Ever since I heard your initial webinar where you listed these, I've been hoping you would write these up! Appreciate the big picture view. Sometimes it's a bit easy to get lost in the details, but now I can fit individual posts into the framework. Gavin, I learn so much from you!

  3. How smashing you have taken the time to flesh out all of the 9 important points Gavin. Sometimes thinking about things too much or for too long allows us to talk ourselves into things and then out of things. I think if you are going to fail at something it is far better to do it quickly that to drag it out… with too much planning this can easily happen :)

  4. Lynda Cromar says:

I love how you broke this down. I see most people start right in the middle with strategies, but they fail I did as well, because there was no vision, or purpose.

  5. This is a very comprehensive list, Gavin. But one will find that when you go through all these details, though it could be perceived as very time consuming, it will indeed help you get more clarity on what you want and the plan to execute it! Lots of people will just declare their intentions but this list helps the individual to go to the next level and move forward.

  6. Wow Gavin, I love this post. You broke it down so well. A lot of people start in the middle and miss out. I too am guilty of having done that but learned the hard way. I believe this post will help so many people. You cannot miss out if you follow the steps and write down everything in details. Thanks for reminding us that we were put here to fulfill a purpose. A clear vision is a must in life and in business. Even the good old Bible says where there is no vision, people perish. Thanks Gavin, you are a true Visionary Leader.
